Illegal Immigrants | Proposed Amnesty
Recently, there have been talks at government level and general speculation concerning the granting of amnesty to illegal immigrants resident in the UK in order to legalise their status.

Government Intervention | Kangs Immigration Solicitors
There have been three amnesties in Britain all of which applied to failed asylum seekers.
- In 1993/4 the Conservative government granted ‘Exceptional Leave to Remain’, now referred to as ‘Discretionary Leave to Remain’, and ‘Humanitarian Protection’, under the European Convention of Human Rights, for asylum seekers unable to qualify for refugee status.
Those granted either form of leave were eventually granted settlement providing that they did not commit a serious criminal offence.
- In 1999/2000 the Labour government granted ‘Indefinite Leave to Remain’ (ILR) under their ‘Legacy Programme’ designed to clear the backlog at the Home Office.
- In 2003 the same government announced that ILR would be granted to families which had sought asylum before October 2000, had children before that date and had experienced delays in the system.
Employment | Disadvantaged Illegal Immigrants
Some employers took advantage of illegal immigrants without status documents but who continued to reside and work in the UK’s black market.
The government started to address this situation by imposing hefty fines and the possibility of imprisonment upon employers found to be employing one or more illegal immigrants without valid status in the UK.
This increased the burden on illegal immigrants as, upon the refusal of a claim for there would no further entitlement to receive National Asylum Support Service support.
Current Proposals | Solicitors For Immigration
The current government proposes an amnesty for all those who have entered the UK illegally or still remain, having overstayed their visas.
The Prime Minister, Theresa May has said that the government will not be driven solely by the interests of the privileged few.
She believes that illegal immigrants really want to take up jobs to support themselves, their families and the national development but they are unable to do so as the result of the restrictions on their lives and that amnesty should be granted to those illegal immigrants.
Now that UK has voted to leave the EU it is believed that they should be given the opportunity to come out of the shadows and into the real economy where they will be able to contribute to the development of the UK.
